Swords and Sandals is a popular series of online role playing games based around living the life of a gladiator.

Since the first game was released in 2005, the games have been played more than 300 million times., been the number 1 RPG on the Apple store in over 20 countries and inspired thousands of Youtube videos.

Swords & Sandals creator Oliver Joyce believes the success of the series lie in it’s easily accessible, and addictive gameplay and irreverent humour. The games don’t take themselves too seriously, gladiators are just as happy to sing and dance as blast each other with fireballs or axes. It’s a simple philosophy that keeps coming back : “Just one more fight, I‘m sure I can beat this arena boss!”

So far there are several games in the series, the latest being Swords & Sandals V: Grail of Antares.

It began, as all good adventures do, with a single hero - a pirate. After a mighty storm, his ship was wrecked and he found himself marooned on the island of Doomtrek and its brutal Arena. Desperation made him a gladiator, but he won freedom by defeating the 7 Arena Champions.

Several years later, the dark Emperor Antares turned the gladiatorial games into a vast and bloody spectacle. Another man, a slave, rose to become the greatest champion ever known. He bested Antares' twenty Arena Champions before defeating the Emperor himself in battle, freeing the slaves and becoming legend.

But Emperor Antares would rise again, launching a horrific war upon the realms of Brandor. The undead fiend raised an army of skeletal gladiators and set about destroying and enslaving the land. The King Lionel and his allies stood before him, rallying a great crusade and defeating him on the fields of Phaetor.

Ten years passed. Far to the west, a new arena rose and drew to it the finest warriors in the realm. Fighters, wizards, desperate men and beasts all fought and died in what would become known as the Gladiae Ultratus. One of these gladiators defeated all 30 Arena Champions and then vanished to do battle beyond the stars.

Not everyone could be a hero, of course. Seeking respite from the grind of battle, many gladiators took to the inns to play the latest craze sweeping the realm - the Tavern Quests. Gladiators competed in various games of skill and strength as they adventured through the amazing lands of Brandor.

Although the great Hero was gone, the Gladiae Ultratus continued. For the first time, gladiators could do battle in multiplayer combat against friends and foes from all round Brandor. These battles rage on even today, with the greatest gladiators rising to the lofty heights of Level 100 and beyond.

Those gladiators who travelled upon the lawless roads of Brandor often found themselves with much time to spare. They could relive the adventures of Swords & Sandals 2 in a miniaturised mobile version, complete with all new stylised graphics and soundtrack.

Although Emperor Antares was slain, rumours spread in the land of a dark cult who sought to return their master to life.

Legend foretold that Antares once drank from an enchanted grail to fuel his life unnaturally. Upon his death, the grail was shattered into five pieces and hidden in dungeons far, far beneath the earth - but if the grail could ever be rebuilt, it might grant it’s owner immortal life.

For the first time, your gladiator steps beyond the arena and into a greater world. Grab your torch, stock up on provisions and descend into darkness. From humble origins and obscurity, you will rise to become a great force for good or weapon of evil. Throughout an epic quest, you will descend into the darkest dungeons, battle frost dragons and undead sorcerer kings. Fiendish traps, labyrinthine mazes and vast new colosseums await. You will amass princely riches and wield weapons blessed by the gods themselves. And you will need them – for the world of Brandor is filled with terrors ancient and deadly.
